Amherst County Schools Recognize Outstanding Students and Staff Members

Amherst County Schools celebrated outstanding student and staff achievements during a special school board meeting on May 8, 2025. The event highlighted the exemplary contributions of students and educators across the district, showcasing their dedication and positive impact on the school community.

Among the honorees was Gideon Thomas from Amherst County High School, recognized for his straight A's, athletic involvement in football, and his role as Nathan Detroit in the school musical "Guys and Dolls." Gideon plans to enlist in the Marine Corps after graduation, embodying the spirit of service and leadership.

The meeting also honored students from various schools for their exceptional character and contributions. Noah Gough from Amherst High was praised for his cheerful demeanor and willingness to help others. Natalia Haley from Manelson Middle School was recognized for her strong work ethic and positive classroom presence, while Remington Simmons from Amelon Middle School was celebrated for his kindness and effort.

Elementary students were not left out, with Roger from Amherst Elementary School and Alina Smith from Elam Elementary School receiving accolades for their accountability and mentorship. Jalen Cook from Madison Heights was acknowledged for her compassion and enthusiasm for learning, and Major Thompson from Temperance Elementary School was commended for his inquisitive nature and friendliness.

The meeting also recognized staff members for their contributions, including Wendy Self from Amherst County High School, who played a crucial role in managing a significant cafeteria relocation project. Tammy Sprouse from Amherst Middle School was honored for her supportive role in school suspension, while Matt Hayward from Amelon was recognized for his dedication and positive relationships with students and parents.

In a special segment, the board acknowledged teachers with 25 years of service in the district, celebrating their long-standing commitment to education in Amherst County.
