Public Works seeks $36M for infrastructure improvements and flooding projects

The Seal Beach City Council convened on May 8, 2025, for a workshop focused on the Capital Improvement Program Budget and the five-year financial forecast. The meeting aimed to outline the city’s strategic financial planning and infrastructure projects.

The session began with a review of current ridership trends, indicating a general upward trajectory, although officials noted that the increase was not sufficient to meet all operational costs. This discussion set the stage for a broader examination of the city’s financial health and future projects.

A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to discussing the city’s pursuit of external funding, with a focus on over $36 million in projects that are either in progress or planned for the near future. One highlight was the application for congressionally directed funding to address critical issues such as flooding in College Park East and trash mitigation in the San Gabriel area. The city has been shortlisted for funding by Congressman Dave Mint, which officials regarded as a positive step, although they cautioned that no funds are guaranteed until they are officially secured.

Following the presentations, Finance Director James Arenado was invited to the podium, where he acknowledged the extensive responsibilities of the finance department.
