Escalante sixth graders perform mariachi classics at Salt Lake City School Board meeting

The Salt Lake City School District Board Meeting on May 6, 2025, commenced with a vibrant performance by the Escalante sixth-grade mariachi ensemble. The group, introduced by choir teacher Callie Wilhoit, showcased their musical talents under the guidance of band teacher Kip Peterson.

The ensemble performed three pieces: "Las Mananitas," a traditional birthday song, followed by "De Colores," and concluded with "Carino." Wilhoit highlighted that many of the musicians were playing their instruments for the first time this year, marking a significant milestone as it was the first mariachi group at Escalante.

Following the performance, the meeting proceeded with the Pledge of Allegiance and recognitions, emphasizing the district's commitment to celebrating student achievements and cultural diversity. The inclusion of the mariachi ensemble not only entertained attendees but also underscored the district's efforts to enrich its music programs and provide students with unique opportunities to express their cultural heritage.
