School Board explores alternatives to plastic packaging and nutrition standards

"We should hear them, we should listen to them," they stated, advocating for a shift towards more sustainable food packaging.

Another committee member challenged the reliance on plastic packaging, suggesting alternatives like wax paper to reduce environmental impact. They stressed the need for a survey to gather student opinions on food preferences, aiming for a more holistic understanding of their needs.

The discussion also touched on nutritional standards, with concerns raised about the quality of certain food items, such as cereal bars. One member criticized the USDA's minimum requirements, arguing that they do not adequately meet the nutritional needs of older students. "If we have concerns that the older students are not getting their tummies filled for lunch... that's not an answer to that motion," they remarked, calling for larger portion sizes to ensure students are well-nourished and ready to learn.
