Parkwood Elementary wins Battle of the Books as Newbridge earns STEM school distinction

Onslow County Schools celebrated significant achievements in literacy and STEM education during the Board of Education meeting held on May 6, 2025. The highlight of the evening was the recognition of the winners from the 2025 Battle of the Books competition, which showcased students' passion for reading and teamwork.

The elementary champions, Parkwood Elementary, triumphed over 17 teams, reading 16 books and securing second place in the regional competition. Their coaches, Erin Glover and Michelle Bailey, along with school administrators, were present to celebrate the team's success. The middle school title went to Jacksonville Commons Middle School, whose team excelled in a one-day event, reading 20 books and advancing to the state competition after a strong performance at the regional level. The high school champions, Richlands High School, also demonstrated impressive knowledge and teamwork, earning their spot at the state competition after competing against district champions.

In addition to the Battle of the Books, the meeting highlighted the recognition of Newbridge Middle School as a recommended North Carolina prepared STEM school of distinction. This honor reflects the school's commitment to integrating STEM education across all subjects, promoting critical thinking and problem-solving skills. The recommendation will be formally presented to the State Board of Education in the fall, marking a significant milestone for the Newbridge community.

The meeting also celebrated the achievements of three teachers from Richlands Elementary School who received national recognition for their innovative science instruction. Their article, published in a prestigious journal, details a hands-on approach to teaching physics concepts through maze design, showcasing the effectiveness of their teaching methods.

These accomplishments underscore Onslow County Schools' dedication to fostering a love for learning and preparing students for future success.
