Creative Waco unveils art apprenticeship mural project for Seventh Street Plaza

The City of Waco is set to enhance its downtown area with an exciting new art project aimed at revitalizing the Seventh Street Plaza. During a recent work session, Fiona Bond, executive director of Creative Waco, presented an overview of the art apprenticeship pavement mural project, which promises to engage the community and provide valuable opportunities for local high school artists.

The mural project, part of Creative Waco's art apprenticeship program, will involve 20 apprentices who will work alongside five artist mentors to transform the plaza into a vibrant and interactive space. The design, which features a giant board game concept, encourages playful interaction among visitors, with prompts that invite participants to share experiences and engage with one another. This initiative not only beautifies the area but also serves as a workforce development opportunity for young artists, many of whom are the first in their families to consider post-secondary education.

The timeline for the project is ambitious, with site preparation beginning this month and mural painting scheduled from May 26 to June 15. A community paint day is planned for May 31, allowing residents to contribute to the mural and make their mark on the plaza. The project is expected to be completed by mid-July, culminating in a celebratory wrap party.

Financially, the project is supported by a combination of grants and contributions, including a $45,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts and additional funding from local foundations and the City Centre Waco. The total cost of the project is estimated at just over $100,000, which includes stipends for the apprentices.

City officials expressed enthusiasm for the project, highlighting its potential to reactivate the downtown space and foster community engagement. The mural is seen as a key element in the broader revitalization efforts for Seventh Street, which aims to create a dynamic environment for both residents and visitors.
