Plymouth launches new Health and Human Services Department for aging population support

Governor Healey has unveiled new initiatives aimed at enhancing support for older adults in Massachusetts, addressing the growing needs of this demographic. During a recent meeting in Plymouth, local leaders highlighted the significant increase in the older population, with projections indicating that 50% of Plymouth residents will be aged 55 and older within five years.

The meeting emphasized the urgency of expanding services for seniors, including meals, exercise, and arts programs. Plymouth's population currently has 42% aged 55 and older, with the number of residents aged 80 and above expected to double in the same timeframe. This demographic shift underscores the necessity for tailored community services.

In response to these needs, Plymouth has established a new Health and Human Services Department, the first of its kind, dedicated to focusing on the well-being of its residents. This initiative aims to engage the community and assess the specific services required by older adults.

The meeting also recognized the contributions of over 300 volunteers who support local programs for seniors, showcasing the community's commitment to enhancing the quality of life for its older population.
