El Centro plans summer programs at Old Post Office Pavilion for community engagement

The City of El Centro Council convened on May 6, 2025, to discuss various community initiatives and programs aimed at enhancing local engagement and recreation. The meeting highlighted the collaborative efforts of city staff and community partners in preparing for an active summer season.

The session began with a presentation showcasing upcoming recreational programs, including a new brochure available online at www.cityofelcentro.org/summer2025. The brochure outlines a variety of activities set to take place at the House of Cultural Arts, also known as the Old Post Office Pavilion. These programs will feature classes in tumbling, theater, music, and sports clinics for young children aged six months to six years.

In addition to these offerings, the city plans to launch a mobile recreation unit that will visit different parks each month. This initiative aims to bring recreational activities directly to the community, featuring games and equipment such as large Jenga, soccer balls, and hula hoops. The city will also collaborate with the fire and police departments to provide safety presentations during these events.

Council members expressed their appreciation for the hard work of city staff and the positive impact these programs have on families, especially during the hot summer months. They noted the importance of providing affordable activities for residents who may not have the means to travel outside the valley.

The meeting also included a discussion on the library's summer programs, which serve a significant number of community members. Council members highlighted the library's role in providing essential services and activities, with attendance figures reaching up to 40,000 in just two months.

Following the presentations, the council moved on to consent items, adopting agenda items 3 and 4 unanimously. The meeting concluded with a public hearing, signaling the council's ongoing commitment to community engagement and development.
