City Council approves 2.5% fee increase for ACE disposal amid rising costs

A proposed amendment to the contract with ACE Disposal took center stage at the West Valley City Council Study Meeting on May 7, 2025. The amendment seeks a 2.5% fee increase, marking the fourth adjustment since the contract began in 2018. This increase is designed to align with rising operational costs, including a reported 25% hike in labor expenses and a 28% rise in garbage truck costs since 2020.

City officials highlighted that the current contract includes an automatic annual fee increase of 2.5%. However, due to significant inflation rates, ACE Disposal has requested additional adjustments to cover their increased costs. The city has previously approved similar requests in fiscal years 2022, 2023, and 2024.

The council discussed the importance of maintaining a good relationship with ACE Disposal, noting their reliable service and the absence of fee increases during the initial three years of the contract. The current collection component of the contract costs approximately $3.5 million annually, while landfill fees have remained stable since the contract's inception.

Looking ahead, city officials are preparing to issue a Request for Proposals (RFP) for the next sanitation contract, which will begin in July 2026. They aim to gather community input on service levels and potential changes before finalizing the RFP. The council is optimistic about the city's financial position, with a healthy fund balance to support future sanitation needs.
