Eighth Graders Explore High School and College Options in Port Angeles

The Port Angeles School District held a board meeting on May 8, 2025, where educators and students showcased their recent projects and initiatives, highlighting the district's commitment to hands-on learning and career preparation.

One of the standout presentations came from a group of students involved in a creative project where they designed sustainable housing. This initiative, part of the "Off the Grid" program, required students to research a specific area—in this case, Yukon—and create a house that not only meets sustainability criteria but also includes provisions for a family of four. Although one student, Leda, made it to the top ten finalists, she did not advance to the top three. Another student, Liam Erwin, participated in a dragster project, making it to the top 60 before being narrowed down to eight finalists.

Additionally, Alice Shields, the vice president of the Associated Student Body (ASB), along with her classmate Sala Walknitz, presented a pop-up book they authored and illustrated. This project emphasized creativity and storytelling, showcasing the students' artistic talents. The board members expressed admiration for the students' work, with one member noting the impressive theme of their projects, which included elements like a dress that lights up, inspired by the natural elements of earth, wind, fire, and water.

The meeting also featured discussions about recent eighth-grade field trips aimed at preparing students for future academic and career paths. Counselors reported that students visited Port Angeles High School, where they explored various classes and met teachers, helping them make informed decisions about their educational journeys. Another trip to Peninsula College allowed students to engage with the campus and learn about the programs offered, marking a return to such explorations after disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
