Domtar proposes $84M Rothschild Dam rehabilitation funding strategy with community support

The Wausau Economic Development Committee convened on May 6, 2025, to discuss significant local projects, including the ongoing status of the Rambo contract and the Domtar Dam rehabilitation project.

Committee members noted that there has been no recent update on the Rambo contract, which is currently under review by the Department of Natural Resources (DNR). The committee expressed a desire for further information as the project progresses.

The primary focus of the meeting was the Domtar Dam rehabilitation project. Dave Fawcett, general manager of the Domtar Rothschild mill, presented details about the dam's condition and the proposed rehabilitation efforts. He emphasized the dam's importance not only to the paper mill but also to the surrounding community, highlighting its role in flood control, recreational opportunities, and overall quality of life in the region.

Fawcett explained that the dam, which has been a vital asset for over a century, is now facing significant structural challenges. The timber crib spillway, a crucial part of the dam, requires replacement due to ongoing leaks and deterioration. The estimated cost for this project is approximately $84 million, and Domtar is seeking local, state, and federal partnerships to help fund the repairs. The company has committed to covering one-third of the costs, amounting to about $28 million.

Fawcett urged the committee to provide letters of support for the project, which would strengthen their case for securing additional funding from government sources. He noted that such support is essential for demonstrating local backing to state and federal representatives, which could facilitate grant opportunities.

The meeting concluded with a call for community engagement and support for the Domtar Dam rehabilitation project, underscoring its significance for both the local economy and the environment. The committee will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as they become available.
