CVSOs promote Cal Vet program to enhance local veteran support in California

During a recent joint hearing of the California State Assembly's Military and Veterans Affairs committees, a significant focus was placed on enhancing support for veterans through local initiatives. The discussion highlighted the critical role of County Veterans Service Officers (CVSOs) in facilitating transitions and retention for veterans, emphasizing their potential to adapt successful models, like that of Los Angeles County, to better serve local populations.

One key opportunity identified was the Cal Vet program, which is currently funded through Proposition 63 and is set to transition to Proposition 1. This program has already demonstrated a positive impact on veteran services, but funding limitations have restricted its reach to only 14 counties, with a budget of approximately $1.6 million for the fiscal year 2022-2023.
