Clover School District plans fleet upgrade with new and used buses for activities

Concerns over the aging activity bus fleet took center stage during the Clover School District's monthly board work session on May 12, 2025. Board members were briefed on the current state of the fleet, which has been a topic of ongoing attention for at least seven years.

Mr. Hunter, the district's transportation manager, provided a detailed update, highlighting that the two oldest buses have been out of service for nearly three years. The fleet includes various types of buses, with the most frequently used being Type C models, while smaller Type A buses are also utilized for specific activities. Notably, issues such as mold in one of the smaller buses and the need for paint on others were discussed, emphasizing the urgent need for upgrades.

Hunter pointed out that the district's activity buses are essential for transporting students to extracurricular events, including sports and band activities. However, the current fleet is stretched thin, particularly on busy days like Friday nights when multiple events occur simultaneously.

The discussion also touched on the technological advancements in newer buses, such as improved braking systems and enhanced visibility features. Hunter noted that ordering a new bus today would cost approximately $145,000, with a delivery timeline of 12 to 14 months. Alternatively, the district could consider purchasing used buses, which could be available as soon as this summer, offering a quicker solution to the fleet's needs.

Looking ahead, Hunter proposed a long-term bus replacement cycle, aiming to add at least 12 new buses to accommodate the increasing demand from the district's expanding student population and upcoming school openings. The board's commitment to addressing these transportation challenges signals a proactive approach to ensuring safe and reliable transportation for Clover School District students.
