Paducah plans new senior center on Kentucky Avenue after building inspection

During the recent McCracken County Fiscal Court meeting, officials discussed plans for a new senior center that could significantly enhance services for local seniors. The current facility is aging and costly to maintain, prompting the county to explore new options.

A year and a half ago, the county purchased a vacant lot on Kentucky Avenue for $150,000, with the intention of building a new center. Additionally, they are in negotiations to acquire a former school building for $145,000, which has not yet closed. The building's inspection revealed mixed conditions; while some areas are in disrepair, the commercial kitchen is in excellent shape, a crucial feature for the senior center's meal programs.

The senior center plays a vital role in the community, delivering 60,000 meals to homebound seniors and serving over 20,000 meals in-house last year. The potential new facility could provide around 40,000 square feet of space, allowing for expanded services and greater outreach to seniors in need.

Officials are currently weighing their options and hope to finalize plans soon. The outcome of this project could greatly improve the quality of life for many seniors in McCracken County, providing them with better access to meals and community activities.
