Mayor Mona Becker proclaims National Police Week in Westminster from May 11 to 17

The City of Westminster Mayor and Common Council convened on May 12, 2025, to address several key agenda items, beginning with a significant proclamation for National Police Week. Mayor Dr. Mona Becker opened the meeting by recognizing the importance of this week, which is observed annually in conjunction with Peace Officers Memorial Day on May 15.

In her proclamation, Mayor Becker highlighted the dedication of over 800,000 sworn law enforcement officers serving across the United States, including the members of the Westminster Police Department. She noted the somber history of law enforcement, mentioning that since the first recorded police death in 1786, more than 24,000 officers have lost their lives in the line of duty. This year, 345 names will be added to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C., honoring those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

The proclamation emphasized that National Police Week draws approximately 40,000 attendees who come together to honor the fallen officers, as well as their canine companions. Mayor Becker officially declared May 11 through May 17 as National Police Week in Westminster, reinforcing the community's commitment to recognizing the service and sacrifice of law enforcement personnel.
