Daybreak Middle School leaders highlight community service and student initiatives

Daybreak Middle School showcased its vibrant student leadership during the Battle Ground School District Board of Directors meeting on May 12, 2025. ASB President Eli Wilhelm and Vice President Harley Henderson presented a range of school activities and initiatives that highlight the school's commitment to student engagement and community service.

Wilhelm emphasized the importance of after-school programs, which include clubs like robotics, chess, and mental health support groups. However, he noted a setback as a recent levy failed, jeopardizing funding for these activities next year. Despite this challenge, Wilhelm shared that the school library raised $15,000 through book fairs, allowing for new book acquisitions and library improvements.

Henderson highlighted the school's community outreach efforts, including a successful canned food drive that collected over 2,000 pounds of food for the North County Food Bank. The ASB also organizes spirit weeks and assemblies to foster school spirit and inclusivity, rewarding good behavior with incentives like snacks and extra recess.

The meeting also featured discussions on the importance of mentorship, with seventh graders assisting younger students in elementary schools, enhancing their learning experiences. This initiative has reportedly been well-received, fostering a sense of community and leadership among the older students.

In addition to the student presentations, the board recognized the achievements of high school athletes from Prairie and Battle Ground High Schools, celebrating their commitments to various colleges and universities. The meeting concluded with a recognition of students participating in National History Day, with two students advancing to the national competition.

The discussions at the meeting underscored the ongoing efforts of the Battle Ground School District to support student development, community involvement, and academic excellence, despite facing funding challenges. The board's commitment to these initiatives reflects a dedication to nurturing future leaders within the community.
