City Council approves Brownfield redevelopment for former Plaza Hotel site

The Southfield City Council convened on May 12, 2025, to discuss several key issues, including a public hearing on the Brownfield redevelopment plan for the former Plaza Hotel and the approval of multiple zoning ordinances.

The meeting began with a public hearing regarding the redevelopment plan and a loan from the local Brownfield revolving fund for the former Plaza Hotel located at 16400 Veil Hudson Drive. After a brief period for public comments, which saw no speakers, the council moved to close the hearing. The council then unanimously approved a motion directing the city attorney to prepare an agreement with the South Hill Community Renewal Corporation for the redevelopment project.

Following the approval of the redevelopment plan, the council addressed three zoning ordinances. The first ordinance conditionally rezoned a vacant parcel on Southfield Road from Office Service to General Business. The second ordinance approved a request from GHG Detroit LLC to rezone a parcel on Northwestern Highway from Multiple Family High Rise to Regional Shopping. The third ordinance rezoned a parcel on Telegraph Road back to Industrial from its previous designation.

Additionally, the council approved a travel expense report for Councilwoman Haines to attend the Michigan Municipal League convention in September 2024.

The meeting concluded with a celebratory note as council members acknowledged Councilwoman Hoag's birthday, highlighting a sense of community among the council members.
