Omaha City Council approves new home modification grant for seniors

A significant focus of the Omaha City Council meeting on March 4, 2025, was the introduction of a new grant program aimed at assisting older adults with home modifications. This initiative, presented by Steve Zivney from the Omaha Planning Department, seeks to provide funding for seniors to make necessary adjustments to their homes, allowing them to age in place and avoid assisted living facilities.

The program will allocate up to $5,000 per household for modifications such as grab bars, improved lighting, and ramps, targeting individuals aged 62 and older with incomes under 80% of the area median income. Zivney emphasized the importance of this program in promoting safety and independence for the elderly population, stating, “The whole premise behind this grant program is to allow those individuals to age in place.”

In addition to the home modification grant, the council discussed the need for funding to upgrade Omaha's sewer system, a requirement mandated by state and federal regulations. Donnie R. Johnson from the Johnson Equestrian Foundation highlighted efforts to secure additional financial support from Senator Fisher for this critical infrastructure project.

The meeting also included discussions on updating floodplain regulations to comply with new FEMA flood maps, which is essential for maintaining the city’s standing in the flood insurance program. Eric England from the planning department noted that this update impacts thousands of parcels across the city, with some residents seeing improved floodplain standings.

As the council moves forward, the approval of these initiatives is expected to enhance community safety and support for vulnerable populations, while also addressing essential infrastructure needs.
