During the recent Police Commission meeting in Brownsburg, significant discussions highlighted the ongoing challenges and responses to mental health crises in the community. Officers have been increasingly called to assist individuals experiencing mental health emergencies, with 37 documented calls for service this year alone. This surge has prompted the department to enhance its training programs, particularly in Crisis Intervention Training (CIT) and the Crisis Negotiation Unit (CNU).
Sergeant Doug Abshire, who recently responded to a mental health crisis involving an autistic adult male, shared his experience of being injured while on duty. Despite the challenges, he emphasized the importance of specialized training for officers to ensure both their safety and that of the individuals they assist. Currently, 10 officers are part of the CNU, with quarterly training sessions aimed at improving their response capabilities. Additionally, 14 shift officers have completed CIT training, equipping them with the skills necessary to handle such sensitive situations effectively.

Officers secured the scene and conducted thorough investigations, which included interviewing witnesses and utilizing Spanish-speaking interpreters to ensure clear communication. The suspect was arrested and charged with multiple felonies related to the incident.
Another alarming case discussed was an attempted carjacking linked to a domestic disturbance. Officers acted swiftly to apprehend the suspect, who was charged with robbery and felony battery after attempting to take the victim's vehicle and blocking her from calling for help.
In a particularly tragic update, the commission reported on a recent arrest related to child molestation involving a former daycare employee. The individual faces multiple felony charges, and the department is committed to supporting the victims and their families throughout the ongoing investigation.
