Saint Mary's Hospital plans rooftop helipad and building expansion in Richmond

Henrico County's Board of Supervisors has taken a significant step towards enhancing healthcare services in the community by approving a proposal from Saint Mary's Hospital to construct an eight-story building and relocate its helicopter landing facility. This decision, made during the board's meeting on May 13, 2025, aims to improve patient care and operational efficiency at the hospital.

The proposed building will house a critical care unit and provide private patient rooms, replacing the current shared accommodations. Although the total number of beds will remain unchanged, the renovations are expected to enhance the quality of care. The new structure will be strategically located between the existing North and South Towers, facing Bremo Road, and will include approximately 200 square feet dedicated to surgery and intensive care.

A key aspect of the proposal is the relocation of the hospital's helipad from its current ground location to the roof of the new building. This change is anticipated to free up around 50 parking spaces and significantly improve access for medevac patients, allowing for quicker transfers to critical care areas. The hospital's leadership emphasized that the new helipad location would also reduce noise for nearby residents, as helicopters would be landing higher above ground.

The planning commission had previously recommended approval of the project, and the board's decision aligns with the 2026 comprehensive plan, which supports the site's long-term use as a hospital. Community engagement was a priority for the hospital, which held three meetings to inform residents about the project. While most feedback was positive, some residents expressed concerns about the helipad's impact on their neighborhoods, prompting discussions about the need for further information and transparency.

In response to community inquiries, hospital officials confirmed that the anticipated number of helicopter landings would remain stable, with around three to four landings per week expected. They also committed to maintaining open communication with residents throughout the construction process, including establishing a dedicated website for updates.

The board's approval marks a pivotal moment for Saint Mary's Hospital, reinforcing its commitment to providing high-quality healthcare while addressing community concerns. As the project moves forward, the hospital aims to balance operational needs with the interests of local residents, ensuring that improvements in healthcare services do not come at the expense of community well-being.
