Warren City Council honors fallen officers during National Police Week

During the recent Orem City Council meeting held on May 13, 2025, significant discussions centered around National Police Week and the contributions of the city's public works department. The meeting highlighted the importance of honoring law enforcement and recognizing the vital services provided by public works employees.

Police Chief BJ Robinson addressed the council, emphasizing the significance of National Police Week, which runs from May 11 to May 17. Established by a joint resolution of Congress in 1962, this week serves to honor law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty. Chief Robinson urged the community to engage in acts of service and kindness, reinforcing the idea that citizens can show respect for fallen officers by being active participants in community life. He expressed gratitude for the support the police department receives from the city council and the community, reaffirming their commitment to making Orem a safe place to live, work, and play.

Following Chief Robinson's remarks, Public Works Director Chris Shirkey presented an overview of the department's activities and upcoming events. He noted that next week would be National Public Works Week, a time to celebrate the contributions of public works employees. Shirkey shared impressive statistics about the department's operations, including the maintenance of over 6,800 trees and 34,000 burial plots in the city cemetery. He highlighted the stormwater division's efforts in street cleaning, with a goal of sweeping every street at least ten times a year. In 2024, the department successfully swept 3,940 lane miles.

Shirkey also provided insights into the city's winter maintenance, noting a significant reduction in salt usage from the previous year, which had experienced record snowfall. He reported that the street crews had produced 24 tons of asphalt in 2024 and maintained 6,320 street lights, with approximately 150 currently out of service.

The discussions during the meeting underscored the city's commitment to public safety and infrastructure maintenance. As Orem prepares to celebrate both National Police Week and National Public Works Week, the council's focus on community engagement and support for essential services reflects a broader commitment to enhancing the quality of life for residents.
