County Board reviews BrightSpeed broadband contract and future connectivity plans

Under the bright lights of the Rockbridge County Board of Supervisors meeting, discussions turned to a topic that has been on the minds of many residents: broadband access. As the digital age continues to evolve, the need for reliable internet service has become increasingly critical, especially in rural areas.

During the meeting on May 13, 2025, Mr. Souter provided an update on the BrightSpeed broadband contract, a significant step towards enhancing connectivity in the region. He recalled previous discussions from December 2024, where the board reviewed broadband grants, including those from BARC and BrightSpeed. The agreements with these providers are essential for securing funding from the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD), which oversees the Virginia Telecommunications Initiative.

Souter explained that while the agreement with BARC was straightforward and has already led to public meetings in areas like Spring Valley and Buffalo Creek, the BrightSpeed contract faced complications. The need to rescope the project arose due to overlapping grant areas, which delayed the agreement's finalization. However, after thorough review by county staff and the Central Planning District Commission, the board received the necessary documentation for consideration.

The proposed agreement, included in the meeting package, is now ready for the board's approval. If sanctioned, a signed copy will be sent to DHCD, with hopes for swift approval. BrightSpeed has already begun preliminary work in parts of the county, and once the contract is executed, they will start connecting customers.

Looking ahead, Souter tentatively invited Chris Dillon from BrightSpeed to the next meeting on May 27, where he will provide further updates on the progress of broadband expansion in Rockbridge County. This initiative represents a crucial investment in the county's infrastructure, promising to bridge the digital divide and enhance the quality of life for its residents.
