Wethersfield School District is set to enhance its educational offerings with the continuation of the KEEN Hands-On Learning program, which has successfully engaged elementary students for four years. The program, led by instructor Andrea Aglico, focuses on experiential learning across various grades, allowing students to explore science and engineering concepts through hands-on activities.
During the recent Board of Education meeting, it was highlighted that the program has become a staple in the district, with Aglico visiting every elementary classroom to facilitate interactive lessons. Students in sixth grade learn about caloric values by making butter, while fifth graders engage in engineering challenges that promote problem-solving skills through trial and error. Younger students explore topics like soil composition and states of matter, using engaging methods such as creating edible finger paint and experimenting with catapults.
The KEEN program is supported by the Richard M. Keane Foundation, which has committed to funding various after-school initiatives, including the SDMS ENCORE program and CLASS Summer Learning for the next two years. This funding, amounting to approximately $285,000 annually, aims to provide enriching experiences for students outside regular school hours. Since its inception, the after-school program has seen over 13,800 enrollments, reflecting its popularity and impact on the community.
The meeting also underscored the importance of collaboration among school staff, parents, and community organizations in making these programs successful. The partnerships have been crucial in identifying students who would benefit from after-school activities and ensuring smooth operations during program hours.
As the district prepares to enter its fifth year of the KEEN program, the commitment to fostering a love for learning through hands-on experiences remains strong. The positive feedback from students and parents alike highlights the program's role in not only enhancing academic skills but also in building confidence and social connections among participants. The Wethersfield School District looks forward to continuing this impactful initiative, further enriching the educational landscape for its students.
