McAllen ISD honors trustees Sofia Pena and Debbie Crane Aliceda for dedicated service

The McAllen Independent School District (ISD) held a special board meeting on May 13, 2025, to honor outgoing trustees Sofia Pena and Debbie Crane Aliceda for their years of dedicated service. The meeting highlighted their significant contributions to the district and the community.

Sofia Pena, who has served on the board since 2021 and recently secured another four-year term, was recognized for her leadership as board president during the 2024-2025 school year. Her academic background includes a doctoral candidacy in educational leadership and a strong commitment to public service, influenced by her family's legacy in education and law enforcement. Pena played a crucial role in establishing the early college high school program in collaboration with South Texas College and has been a vocal advocate for dual credit programs and the disability community.

Debbie Crane Aliceda, who began her tenure in May 2011, was also celebrated for her long-standing commitment to education and community service. With a family deeply rooted in McAllen ISD, Aliceda's advocacy for fine arts and education has significantly impacted the district. She has served on various boards and organizations aimed at enhancing children's lives, including the Southern Region Education Board and local initiatives like the Boys and Girls Club of McAllen.

Both trustees received plaques in recognition of their service, underscoring the importance of their contributions to McAllen ISD and the broader community. The meeting not only celebrated their achievements but also set a tone of gratitude and continuity as the district looks to the future.
