Woodlawn Middle School is making significant strides in academic performance, as highlighted during the recent EBR School Board Committee of the Whole Meeting. The school currently serves approximately 812 students in grades 6 through 8, with a diverse demographic that includes 67% economically disadvantaged students and a notable representation of African American (58.3%), Hispanic (21.4%), white (15.6%), and Asian (3.9%) students.
The school's performance score has reached 73.8, marking the highest level achieved since changes to the scoring guidelines. This improvement is particularly noteworthy given the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, which resulted in substantial learning loss and teacher vacancies. Despite these setbacks, Woodlawn has shown a remarkable growth of 10 points in its performance score from 2023 to 2024.
The school’s progress index stands at 89.7, just shy of the coveted 'A' rating, reflecting ongoing efforts to enhance student achievement. The dropout bridal accumulation index (DCAI) indicates that students are successfully earning high school credits, with the school maintaining an 'A' rating in this area for several years.
In terms of subject mastery, English Language Arts (ELA) leads with 45% of students scoring at mastery or advanced levels. The school aims to increase this to 50% while also striving for at least 30% mastery in math, science, and social studies. Although ELA scores have shown consistent growth, math and science performance has not met expectations, particularly following changes to the social studies assessment.
As Woodlawn Middle School continues to address these challenges, the administration remains committed to improving educational outcomes and ensuring that all students are equipped for success in high school and beyond. The community can look forward to further developments as the school implements strategies to enhance learning and support its diverse student body.
