Ogden City Council approves naming of new Marshall White Community Center

During the Ogden City Council meeting on May 13, 2025, significant discussions centered around the renaming of the newly constructed community center to honor Detective Sergeant Marshall N. White. This decision reflects a deep respect for White's legacy, which includes breaking racial barriers as one of Ogden's first Black police officers and his extensive contributions to the community.

The proposal to name the center the Marshall N. White Community Center was presented with a focus on White's dedication to public service, leadership, and community engagement. Born in Tennessee and raised in Chicago, White served in the Army Air Corps during World War II before settling in Ogden. His commitment to public health earned him the nickname "Doc," and he became a trusted figure in the community. Tragically, White was killed in the line of duty in 1963, an event that left a profound impact on Ogden.

The original Marshall White Center, dedicated in 1968, served as a vital hub for recreation and community engagement for over five decades. However, due to structural issues, the center was closed and demolished in 2023. The decision to build a new facility at the same location aims to preserve White's legacy while providing a modern space for community activities. Groundbreaking for the new center occurred in July 2023, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony scheduled for May 22, 2025.

The council unanimously approved the renaming proposal, emphasizing its historical significance and cultural representation. This gesture not only honors a local hero but also strengthens community bonds and inspires future generations to engage with the center's programs.

In addition to the community center, the council also discussed naming the gymnasium within the new facility after Bill Lyons, a respected figure in Ogden's youth sports community. Lyons, who served as the director of the original Marshall White Center, played a crucial role in mentoring young athletes and fostering personal growth through sports. The gymnasium will be named the Bill Lyons Gymnasium, or the Lions Den, as a tribute to his lasting impact on the community.
