Loudoun County Board proposes amendments to solar energy equipment ordinance

Loudoun County is set to update its solar energy equipment ordinance, a move that reflects the growing adoption of residential solar systems. During the Finance/Government Operations and Economic Development Committee meeting on May 13, 2025, officials discussed necessary amendments to Ordinance 868, which governs tax exemptions for certified solar energy equipment.

The proposed changes come after a request for clarification from the attorney general's office revealed conflicting language within the existing code. This prompted the county to streamline the ordinance to better support the increasing number of solar installations seeking tax exemptions. Rob Drake, who oversees the tax exemptions division, was present to address any specific inquiries regarding the exemption process.

Committee members expressed satisfaction with the rising trend in residential solar systems, noting that the amendments are not expected to have a significant fiscal impact. A motion was made to recommend that the Board of Supervisors authorize staff to advertise a public hearing for the proposed changes, which will allow for further public input before final approval.
