West Virginia honors 2025 Golden Horseshoe winners and Service Person of the Year

In a vibrant celebration of academic achievement, the Monongalia County Board of Education gathered on May 13, 2025, to honor the winners of the prestigious Golden Horseshoe award, a tradition that has recognized outstanding eighth-grade students in West Virginia history since 1931. The atmosphere buzzed with excitement as students from various middle schools were called to the front, each beaming with pride as they received their accolades.

Among the honorees was Jake DeVault from Mountaineer Middle School, who, along with his classmate Hadley Evans, was celebrated for their exceptional knowledge of West Virginia history. Principal Rogers took a moment to express his pride, highlighting not just their academic excellence but their overall contributions to the school community. “They excel at everything,” he remarked, underscoring the well-rounded nature of these young scholars.

The ceremony continued with Nariah Gray from South Middle School, who was recognized not only for her academic prowess but also for her athletic achievements in track and field. Although she was unable to attend in person due to a championship event, her accomplishments were acknowledged with enthusiasm, and a board member promised to deliver her plaque directly to her.

Emma Bond, also from South Middle, received warm words of praise from her teacher, Mrs. Brown, who emphasized the hard work and dedication of her students. The celebration included students from Suncrest and Westwood Middle Schools, with each honoree receiving heartfelt commendations from their teachers and principals, showcasing the supportive educational environment in Monongalia County.

The meeting also recognized Charles Darr, affectionately known as Mister Chuck, as the 2025-2026 Service Person of the Year. An autism mentor at Skyview Elementary, Mister Chuck was nominated for his unwavering dedication and positive impact on students with exceptional needs. Principal Jen Cox shared a touching story about his journey from a FedEx employee to a beloved figure in the school, illustrating the profound difference he makes in the lives of students and staff alike.

As the meeting progressed, the board members read guidelines for upcoming delegations, signaling a commitment to community engagement and transparency.
