Mental Health Awareness Month took center stage at the Riverside County Board of Supervisors meeting on May 7, 2024, with a compelling presentation from Dr. Matthew Chang, the Behavioral Health Director. Dr. Chang highlighted the significance of May as a time to raise awareness about mental health issues, emphasizing the need for education, support, and stigma reduction.
"Nearly 1 in 5 U.S. adults live with a mental illness," Dr. Chang stated, underscoring the importance of early intervention and community support. He detailed the Riverside University Health System's (RUHS) comprehensive mental health services, including urgent care for crises and mobile crisis teams available 24/7. The county's commitment to mental health extends beyond May, with ongoing programs aimed at prevention and early intervention, particularly for youth.
This year's theme for Mental Health Month is "The Art of Wellness," featuring community events designed to engage and educate. Dr. Chang encouraged participation in upcoming fairs, including one in San Jacinto on May 9 and another in Riverside on May 23, promising fun activities alongside valuable mental health resources.
Additionally, Dr. Chang announced the "Directing Change" contest, an initiative that empowers youth to create 60-second public service announcements on mental health and suicide prevention. The event will take place on May 16 at the historic Fox Performing Arts Center, showcasing the creative contributions of local students.
The meeting also included a proclamation recognizing Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, linking cultural awareness with mental health support for vulnerable populations. Supervisor Gutierrez expressed the importance of this recognition, reinforcing the board's commitment to mental health initiatives.
As Riverside County continues to lead in mental health advocacy, the discussions from this meeting highlight a proactive approach to addressing mental health challenges and fostering community engagement.
