Belton ISD is set to transition its elementary campuses to Google Classroom following a comprehensive evaluation of its current learning management systems (LMS), including Schoology. During the May 12, 2025, board meeting, Melissa Lafferty, along with the technology team, presented findings that highlighted the need for a more streamlined and effective LMS to enhance educational resources.
The evaluation aimed to determine whether Schoology was the best fit for the district's needs. Currently, Belton ISD utilizes three different systems: Schoology, Google Classroom, and Seesaw, with varying levels of usage across grade levels. The data revealed that while Schoology is heavily used at the secondary level, Google Classroom is the preferred choice for elementary students due to its user-friendly interface and cost-effectiveness.

Notably, all elementary principals expressed a desire to standardize on Google Classroom, citing its ease of use and familiarity among students.
As part of the transition plan, the district will begin piloting Google Classroom at the secondary level while continuing to gather feedback from teachers and students. This phased approach aims to ensure a smooth implementation and address any potential gaps in functionality compared to Schoology.
The board emphasized the importance of comprehensive training for teachers and dedicated time for transferring materials from Schoology to Google Classroom. The transition is expected to begin in the summer, with full implementation for elementary schools slated for the upcoming school year.
This decision marks a significant shift in Belton ISD's approach to digital learning, aiming to maximize resources and enhance the educational experience for students across the district. The board will continue to monitor the pilot program's progress and make informed decisions regarding the secondary level's LMS in the future.
