A new Dunkin' Donuts is set to rise at the Laurel Glen Shopping Center in St. Mary's County, following a unanimous approval from the Planning Commission. The decision, made during the May 12 meeting, aims to transform an underutilized parking lot into a standalone fast-food restaurant, complete with a drive-through.
Anthony Olexon, representing the project, emphasized the need for this development, noting the current challenges customers face at the existing Dunkin' location. "It can be challenging to get in and out," he stated, highlighting the anticipated improvements in traffic flow and accessibility. The project has been coordinated with the shopping center's owner, ensuring that it aligns with the needs of current tenants.

"This will largely improve both people being able to get to a donut and getting in and out of there in a safe fashion," one member remarked.
The approval comes with a condition that any necessary road improvements must be completed before the issuance of a certificate of occupancy. This step is crucial to ensure that the infrastructure can handle the expected increase in traffic.
In a lighter moment, the meeting also included heartfelt farewells to Jim Gotch, a valued member of the planning team, who is retiring. His contributions and humor were acknowledged, with fellow members expressing their gratitude for his service.
