Taos County is set to enhance community engagement and economic vitality with the introduction of new initiatives aimed at revitalizing the historic Plaza District. During the Taos County Board of Commission Regular Meeting on May 12, 2025, officials outlined a comprehensive vision for creating an inclusive, vibrant civic space that caters to residents of all ages.
Key to this revitalization is the commitment to inclusivity and community partnerships. The Plaza District will be designed to welcome families, youth, and seniors, with a focus on safe, accessible spaces that encourage public engagement. The plan includes a series of activations—events and activities that celebrate local culture and identity—aimed at drawing residents and visitors alike to the area.

Taos Main Street has secured $1 million in funding from the state, with the town of Taos and Taos County collaborating on subsequent phases. These improvements are expected to enhance the comfort and safety of the Plaza, fostering a stronger sense of community and encouraging more frequent use of the space.
Additionally, a new fitness initiative called "Meet Me at McCarthy's" will launch on May 19, 2025. This program aims to promote physical activity and community connection by inviting residents to participate in low to medium impact activities every Monday evening at the Plaza. The initiative is designed to create a welcoming environment for all ages, encouraging local participation and potentially boosting business for downtown merchants.
The meeting also introduced the Business Resource and Innovation Center (BRIC), a hub intended to support local entrepreneurs and stimulate economic growth. Scheduled to open in October 2025, the BRIC will provide a one-stop shop for business resources, including startup support and coaching, aimed at fostering a diverse and resilient local economy.
These initiatives reflect a broader strategy to shift the focus of downtown Taos from primarily serving tourists to better meeting the needs of local residents. By creating a vibrant, inclusive community space and supporting local businesses, Taos County aims to enhance civic pride and economic sustainability in the region.
