Santa Clara County speakers advocate for community organizing and educational programs

Community engagement and educational initiatives took center stage at the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors Budget Workshop on May 14, 2025, as local leaders and residents voiced their support for vital programs aimed at enhancing the quality of life in the region.

Mary Idizo, representing PACT (People Acting in Community Together), highlighted the organization's efforts in faith-based community organizing, which serves 17,000 residents across 22 congregations. Idizo expressed gratitude to Supervisors Otto Lee and Duan Duan for their commitment to fostering a moral economy that supports families in Santa Clara County.

Sharon Luna from the San Martin Association followed, emphasizing the need for funding to revitalize the San Martin community. She described the association's mission to protect the area's rural atmosphere and promote positive growth, urging the board to support initiatives that empower residents to engage in community development.

The workshop also featured Sayam Mocton, a senior development manager at the Silicon Valley Education Foundation, who advocated for grants to support tuition-free summer programs. Mocton underscored the importance of these programs in equipping students with essential STEM skills, leading to improved academic performance and increased opportunities for higher education.

As public comments concluded, the board prepared to discuss various inventory items, reflecting a strong community desire for investment in education and local development. The discussions signal a commitment to addressing the needs of Santa Clara County residents and fostering a collaborative approach to community improvement.
