Nogales city council addresses business licenses and compliance for new enterprises

The Nogales City Council meeting on May 14, 2025, highlighted a significant uptick in local business activity, with 2,854 active business licenses reported for March. The meeting revealed that 19 licenses were suspended or canceled, while 18 new licenses were issued, indicating a positive trend in business growth. Notably, Wingstop is set to open downtown on May 19, marking a key addition to the local dining scene.

Council members expressed concerns about businesses operating without completed licenses. One council member pointed out that many establishments are open but have not finalized their licensing process, which could misrepresent the actual number of compliant businesses in the city. This issue raises questions about the accuracy of business statistics and the need for better tracking and compliance measures.

City officials acknowledged the challenges in processing business licenses, emphasizing that the city’s approach is more thorough than in many other municipalities. The licensing process in Nogales includes safety inspections and zoning verifications, which can extend the time it takes for businesses to become fully licensed. Currently, 55 businesses are in the application process, and city staff are actively engaging with these businesses to ensure compliance.

In addition to business licensing, the council discussed the importance of code compliance to maintain community standards. Officials stressed that proper zoning and property use are crucial for public safety and environmental health, particularly concerning dust and fire hazards associated with improperly maintained lots.
