Clearfield City business owner challenges disproportionate business license fee increase

During the Clearfield City Council meeting on May 13, 2025, a local business owner raised concerns about the significant increase in business license fees, which have surged from $5.60 to approximately $2,900 annually. The owner, who has operated the business for four years, attributed this hike to a formula based on police presence, which he argued does not accurately reflect his experience. He reported that in the past three years, his business had fewer than five police visits annually, far below the average of 11.5 visits used to calculate the fees.

The business owner expressed his frustration during the public comment section, stating he was not seeking immediate answers but wanted to present his case to the council. In response, the city manager directed him to the community development director, Stacy Milgate, for further clarification and assistance regarding the fee structure.

In addition to this discussion, the council considered the approval of the 2025-2026 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) five-year consolidated plan and the one-year action plan. Council members expressed their appreciation for the work done by staff member Allison, highlighting the importance of these resources for the community.
