Hoboken schools announce spring events including Newsies and senior prom

The Hoboken Board of Education convened on May 13, 2025, to discuss a range of topics, including upcoming events, curriculum updates, and administrative matters, as the school year approaches its conclusion. The meeting highlighted the district's commitment to student engagement and community involvement, as well as ongoing efforts to enhance educational programs.

One of the most anticipated events is the district's musical production of "Newsies," scheduled for May 16-18 at Hoboken High School. This performance showcases the talents of students from kindergarten through 12th grade, emphasizing the district's dedication to fostering creativity and collaboration among its students. Additionally, the spring concert for Hoboken Middle School and Hoboken High School is set for May 28, further enriching the cultural offerings for the community.

In her report, student representative Jenna Serio shared highlights from recent student government activities, including a successful National Student Leadership Week and a Family Math Game Night that attracted around 200 participants. Upcoming events include a self-defense class on May 19 and the senior prom on May 29, demonstrating the vibrant student life within the district.

The curriculum committee reported on several key initiatives, including the acceptance of a $41,004.97 grant from the New Jersey Department of Education for computer science education. The committee also discussed the implementation of school-based puberty lessons for fifth graders, which will be conducted during physical education classes. Parents will receive information about the program and have the option to opt out.

Facilities and finance reports indicated ongoing efforts to improve school infrastructure and manage budgets effectively. The facilities committee reviewed fire and safety drill reports and discussed energy efficiency initiatives aimed at reducing long-term operating costs. The finance committee recommended approval of contracts for essential services and highlighted the submission of a grant for sidewalk repairs.

The governance committee addressed staffing changes, including the appointment of Steven Dickerson as acting principal for Wallace Elementary School. The committee also noted the importance of community feedback, as they prepare to host roundtable discussions based on responses to a recent strategic plan survey.
