Councilwoman Faustini reported the committee recommended applying for CDBG funds to support the Senior Center Kitchen project; the committee proposed applying for $12,500 to cover senior-center salary costs as part of the borough's CDBG application and said the project will seek roughly $100,000 in remaining funds toward a full kitchen overhaul. The planned work described by staff and the committee includes new cabinetry, appliances and flooring. Mr. Miller reported the borough had already authorized the senior-center roof project and awarded the contract, and that a backup generator contract for the police department and town hall had also been awarded and would start shortly. He said work is planned or underway this year on four major projects: the Hadley Road sanitary sewer work, South Plainfield Avenue and related roadway projects, and other resurfacing work. Mr. Miller said a DOT grant of about $414,000 is part of the financing for these efforts.

In other business the council approved payment of bills totaling $890,295.31 and moved into an executive session to discuss two legal matters and one contractual matter. Public-comment speakers included Debbie Boyle Van Fleet, who presented and thanked council members and staff for assistance arranging display art by the high school Environmental Science Club and Girl Scouts; several council members acknowledged community events and upcoming municipal programs, including a borough rabies clinic scheduled for May 3 from 9 a.m. to noon at the DPW garage and a South Plainfield Cultural Arts Committee Black History Month talk scheduled Feb. 25 at 6 p.m. at the borough library.
