Mental Health America launches Turn Awareness into Action campaign for May

Mental Health Awareness Month took center stage at the Sierra Madre City Council meeting on May 13, 2025, as officials highlighted the urgent need for increased awareness and advocacy in mental health care. With over 30 million Americans lacking access to comprehensive mental health services, the discussion underscored the critical importance of this annual observance.

Council members noted that one in five adults in the U.S. experiences mental illness each year, and alarmingly, 20% of high school students have seriously considered suicide. These statistics emphasize the ongoing mental health crisis, particularly among youth, where only half of those with mental health conditions receive treatment.

This year's theme, "Turn Awareness into Action," was introduced by Mental Health America, the leading organization coordinating the campaign. The theme aims to celebrate progress in recognizing mental health's importance while challenging communities to take meaningful steps toward change.

The council encouraged residents to engage with resources available through Mental Health America, including daily tips for improving personal mental health. One such tip shared during the meeting was a breathing exercise known as box breathing, designed to promote calmness and mindfulness.

As Mental Health Action Day approaches on May 15, the council urged community members to share their mental health stories, fostering a supportive environment and encouraging open conversations about mental health challenges. This initiative aims to not only raise awareness but also advocate for broader community support and resources.
