James Campbell High School celebrates three championship-winning junior varsity teams

In a vibrant ceremony at Honolulu City Hall, the City Council of Honolulu celebrated the remarkable achievements of three junior varsity sports teams from James Campbell High School. The atmosphere was filled with excitement as Council Member Talbot led the presentations, recognizing the hard work and dedication of these young athletes.

The first team honored was the junior varsity girls soccer team, who made history by winning the 2025 OIA JV soccer championship. Their victory over Mililani marked not only their first championship title but also ended Mililani's impressive 23-year undefeated streak. With a record of six wins and one loss, the Lady Savers showcased exceptional talent under the guidance of head coach James Curran and his assistant coaches.

Next, the junior varsity boys basketball team was celebrated for their undefeated season, culminating in a championship win against Kahuku High School on February 4. Their success was a testament to teamwork and perseverance, earning them the OIA JV championship title. The players, along with head coach Alan Otez and his dedicated staff, received a warm round of applause from the audience.

The final team recognized was the junior varsity boys volleyball team, who also made history by securing the JV championship title for the first time. They triumphed over the Mauna Loa Mini Hoonies and boasted an impressive preseason record of 11 wins and 1 loss. Head coach Jeffrey Pasquale Mateo and his committed coaching staff were acknowledged for their role in fostering the team's extraordinary skills and sportsmanship.

In a heartfelt moment, Council Member Talbot also paid tribute to the Campbell High School flag football team, who were unable to attend but were celebrated for becoming the first-ever state champions in their sport. The recognition of these young athletes not only highlighted their individual and team accomplishments but also underscored the spirit of community and support that defines Honolulu.
