Missoula nears completion of world's first hand carved carousel in over 60 years

In a recent government meeting, officials discussed the nearing completion of the Carousel for Missoula, an ambitious project set to open next month in Riverside Carousel Park. This carousel will be the first completely hand-carved carousel built in over 60 years, marking a significant cultural milestone for Missoula, Montana.

The project began as an idea from local woodcarver Chuck Caprich and has since garnered substantial community support. Over three years, Caprich and numerous volunteers have dedicated their time and skills to bring this vision to life. The carousel building, designed by Missoula architect Jay Kirby, is not just a structure; it is a centerpiece that clearly showcases the carousel itself, contributing to its appeal and significance.

The carousel will feature 38 intricately carved ponies, each taking approximately 800 hours to complete, along with two chariots designed for handicapped accessibility. Additionally, the carousel will include a gift shop and an authentic band organ, which took over a year and a half to construct. A unique feature of the carousel will be a ring machine, allowing children on the outer row of horses to reach for a brass ring, enhancing the interactive experience.
