James Island Town Council has taken a significant step towards enhancing community safety and youth engagement by approving funding for swim lessons through the Gullah Swim Academy. During the council meeting on May 15, 2025, the council recognized the urgent need for swimming education among local youth, particularly given the area's proximity to various bodies of water.
The initiative, proposed by a local bishop, aims to address the alarming number of young residents who lack swimming skills, which poses safety risks in a community surrounded by creeks, streams, and lakes. Nicole Ashby from the Gullah Swim Academy offered to provide swim lessons at a reduced rate, making it financially feasible for the town to proceed. The program will accommodate up to 60 participants, with each lesson costing $75, which includes lane rentals, insurance, and instructional materials such as swim caps and goggles.
