Escondido declares May 2025 as Economic Development Week to support local businesses

Escondido City Council kicked off its May 14 meeting with a strong focus on economic growth, declaring the week as Economic Development Week. Mayor Dane White emphasized the importance of the city’s economic development team, which plays a vital role in fostering a thriving business environment.

In his proclamation, Mayor White highlighted the contributions of over 10,000 businesses in Escondido, which provide more than 47,000 local jobs and generate significant annual sales tax revenue. He urged residents to engage in activities that promote economic growth, reinforcing the city’s commitment to supporting both small and large enterprises.

Jennifer Schenick, the Director of Economic Development, echoed the mayor's sentiments, thanking the council for their support. She noted that over 85% of local businesses have fewer than 10 employees, underscoring their critical role in the community. Schenick also mentioned the department's efforts to streamline processes and improve customer service to create a welcoming environment for businesses.

The meeting also included a brief roll call, with Councilman Fitzgerald absent, and a motion to approve several consent calendar items, which passed unanimously. The council's focus on economic development signals a proactive approach to enhancing the local economy and supporting community growth.
