Caledonia Community Schools is set to enhance its educational offerings following the recent approval of a significant career and technical education grant during the May Regular Board Meeting held on May 23, 2024. The grant, awarded by the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME), will provide essential resources to bolster the district's career and technical education (CTE) programs, benefiting students from ninth grade through high school graduation.
Superintendent Dr. Diaz announced that Caledonia High School is one of only 16 schools in Michigan selected for this prestigious grant. The funding will supply equipment, curriculum, and industry-recognized credentials, along with scholarships for students transitioning to post-secondary education. Notably, the grant includes a sustainability fund, ensuring that the benefits of the program can continue beyond the initial funding period.
In addition to the grant announcement, the board discussed the ongoing strategic plan refresh, which aims to evaluate and update the district's goals as the current five-year plan concludes. The refresh will involve community engagement through surveys and focus groups, allowing stakeholders to provide input on future objectives. The board emphasized the importance of measurable goals to ensure accountability and effectiveness in achieving educational outcomes.
Another highlight of the meeting was the introduction of Nathan Walters as the new principal of Emmons Lake Elementary School. Walters expressed his commitment to the community and excitement about contributing to the district's mission of enhancing student success.
The meeting also addressed concerns raised by a special education paraprofessional regarding the lack of a $1 per hour differential for toileting students, which had not been honored due to recent changes in classroom classifications. The paraprofessional emphasized the importance of this differential for staff who provide essential care to students with special needs.
As Caledonia Community Schools moves forward with these initiatives, the district aims to strengthen its educational framework and continue fostering a supportive environment for both students and staff. The board's commitment to community involvement and strategic planning reflects a proactive approach to addressing the needs of the district and its stakeholders.
