Hampton City Council approves multifamily development along North Armistead Avenue

Hampton City Council has taken a significant step towards enhancing local housing options by approving a proposal for a new multifamily residential development during their recent legislative session. The project, located off North Armistead Avenue, will consist of three and four-story buildings housing a maximum of 215 units, featuring a mix of one, two, and three-bedroom apartments.

Key features of the development include elevators in all four-story buildings and a total of 346 parking spaces. The project will also offer a range of community amenities such as a pool, clubhouse, fitness center, outdoor grilling areas, and bike storage facilities. Notably, the design incorporates resilient stormwater management standards, five electric vehicle charging stations, and energy-efficient appliances, aligning with the city’s commitment to sustainability.

The site, which is adjacent to the Windsor Terrace neighborhood and the Trail Creek apartment community, is zoned for mixed-use development, allowing for a blend of residential and commercial spaces. This initiative is part of Hampton's broader strategy to revitalize underutilized properties and promote high-quality urban design that fosters community interaction and public safety.

City staff emphasized that the proposal aligns with the city’s land use policies and the Central Master Plan, which encourages diverse housing types and walkable neighborhoods. A community meeting held in December 2024 saw minimal opposition, indicating local support for the project.

As Hampton continues to grow, this development is expected to provide much-needed housing options while enhancing the overall quality of life for residents in the area. The council's approval marks a proactive approach to addressing housing demands and promoting sustainable urban development in the city.
