Anne Arundel Department of Aging plans new services and expansion for FY 25

The Anne Arundel County Department of Aging and Disabilities is set to enhance its services for older adults and individuals with disabilities, following a robust presentation at the County Council meeting on May 15, 2025. With a budget of nearly $12 million, the department reported significant achievements in the past fiscal year, serving over 17,000 residents and providing 558,000 units of service through 25 programs.

Key initiatives highlighted include a pilot mental health program aimed at addressing disparities in mental health services, as well as efforts to combat food and housing insecurity through targeted grant funding. The department has also expanded its transportation options and resource navigation services to better serve the community's needs.

In a notable achievement, the department successfully launched two new behavioral health initiatives, allowing them to bill for these services, which will ensure sustainability and longevity for these programs. The senior activity centers in the county have seen a surge in membership, with 3,600 new members joining in the past year.

The department's eviction prevention program has made a tangible impact, helping older adults avoid losing their homes through utility and rental assistance, with $222,000 allocated to this initiative. Additionally, the veteran services program received 695 calls, providing essential resource navigation and claims filing assistance.

Looking ahead, the department is preparing for an increase in demand for services as the older adult population continues to grow. Plans for the next budget cycle focus on addressing critical needs such as nutrition, transportation, affordable housing, and accessible mental health services. The expansion and renovation of the Arnold Senior Activity Center is also underway, with construction expected to begin in early fiscal year 2026.

The department remains committed to fostering public-private partnerships to enhance service delivery and improve population health outcomes. As they await further funding from the reauthorization of the Older Americans Act, the department is poised to continue its mission of making life better for the residents of Anne Arundel County.
