Westminster City Council is taking significant steps to enhance community services by transitioning several part-time positions to full-time roles. The council is proposing to convert 40 part-time hours into a full-time administrative assistant position at the community services front desk. This change aims to improve service consistency and reduce the ongoing training burden associated with frequently changing part-time staff. Similar justifications were noted for other departments, including community development and public works, where high turnover has hindered operational efficiency.
In public works, the council is looking to consolidate two part-time meter reader positions into one full-time role. This move is expected to enhance reliability and commitment, as full-time staff are more likely to stay longer and provide consistent service. The department also plans to create a full-time administrative assistant position to manage new state and federal mandates related to water quality and conservation.
Concerns were raised about the lengthy process for installing new water meters, particularly for new accessory dwelling units (ADUs), which can take up to nine months. While the new positions are not directly aimed at speeding up this process, city officials acknowledged that increasing staff could help address the backlog. The cost of hiring additional personnel was also discussed, with estimates indicating that each new water technician would cost approximately $85,360.
The council's decisions reflect a proactive approach to staffing challenges and aim to improve service delivery for Westminster residents. As these changes are implemented, the city anticipates a more efficient operation that can better meet the needs of its growing community.
