Baltimore City Council hosts taxpayer night for fiscal year 2026 budget feedback

The Baltimore City Council held its annual Taxpayers' Night on May 15, 2025, providing residents an opportunity to voice their opinions on the proposed budget for the upcoming fiscal year. Councilwoman Danielle McCray, chair of the Budget & Appropriations Committee, emphasized the importance of community input in shaping the city’s financial priorities.

During the meeting, McCray clarified that there would be no increase in real property tax rates, maintaining the current rate at $2.0248 per $100 of assessed value. This announcement aimed to alleviate concerns stemming from the annual tax rate announcement, which can often be confusing. The proposed operating budget for fiscal year 2026 stands at $3.7 billion, reflecting an increase of $220.8 million from the previous year. Additionally, the capital plan is set at $931.9 million, up by $199.5 million.

City Council President Z. Cohen expressed optimism about Baltimore's future, highlighting the council's commitment to addressing key issues such as housing, public safety, and environmental concerns. He encouraged residents to actively participate in the budget discussion, stating that the budget reflects the city’s values and priorities.
