Waterleaf plans lithium production facility at Great Salt Lake to boost US supply

In a recent meeting held by the Great Salt Lake Advisory Council, discussions centered around a significant lithium extraction project proposed by Waterleaf, a subsidiary of Lilac Solutions. This initiative aims to address the growing demand for lithium, primarily driven by the electric vehicle (EV) market, which is expected to triple in demand over the coming years.

Currently, global lithium production stands at approximately 1.1 million tons annually, with the United States contributing a mere 5,000 tons, primarily from a facility in Nevada. The Waterleaf project, however, is poised to double U.S. lithium production by generating an additional 5,000 tons per year. This output could potentially support the production of around 1.7 million electric vehicles over the project's lifespan, which is projected to commence operations in 2027.

The meeting highlighted the innovative technology employed by Waterleaf, which is designed to extract lithium from various brine sources, including the Great Salt Lake. This method promises to use less water and land compared to traditional extraction techniques, making it a more sustainable option. The project is strategically located on the north side of the Great Salt Lake, an area noted for its higher lithium concentrations.

In terms of economic impact, the project is expected to create approximately 100 construction jobs and 65 permanent positions once operational. Local hiring is a priority, with plans to source employees from the surrounding communities. Additionally, the project will generate significant royalty payments for the extraction of lithium, contributing to state revenues and supporting local economies.

As the meeting progressed, the council members expressed their support for the project, recognizing its potential to bolster the local economy while addressing the urgent need for lithium in the growing EV market. The discussions underscored the importance of balancing economic development with environmental considerations, particularly in relation to the Great Salt Lake's ecosystem.
