Westport High School's engineering program partners with Lockheed Martin for paid internships

In a recent visit to West Port High School, Marion County School District Superintendent highlighted the remarkable achievements of the school's engineering program, led by educator Miss Bethea. This program, part of the Project Lead the Way initiative, has undergone significant transformation, elevating its curriculum to a national standard and providing students with hands-on experiences that prepare them for future careers in engineering.

During the visit, Miss Bethea expressed gratitude towards district leaders and her principal for their support in realizing her vision for the program. Over the past year, students have engaged in various competitions, including a notable challenge in collaboration with the University of Central Florida (UCF) and Lockheed Martin. This partnership has allowed students to participate in real-world projects, with 80 students involved in a NASA challenge, showcasing their skills and creativity.

The program's success is evident as students are now receiving paid internships, with two seniors recently accepted for summer positions at Lockheed Martin and the City of Ocala's engineering department. These opportunities not only enhance their resumes but also provide invaluable experience in the engineering field.

Students shared their enthusiasm for the program, noting the extensive extracurricular activities that have enriched their learning experience. They have participated in field trips to major engineering firms and engaged in projects that cover various aspects of engineering, including artificial intelligence and mechanical drafting. The hands-on approach has been instrumental in preparing them for future academic and career pursuits.

The visit also included a stop at Dunnellon Elementary School, where the focus shifted to community engagement and support for families. This dual emphasis on high school engineering excellence and elementary family resources reflects the district's commitment to fostering educational growth at all levels.
