Capitola proposes $6000 budget for new Wharf community events series

During the recent Capitola City Council meeting on May 15, 2025, city officials discussed a range of community engagement initiatives, particularly focusing on events at The Wharf and enhancements to local programs. The meeting highlighted the city's commitment to fiscal responsibility while fostering community involvement through various activities.

One of the key topics was the successful hosting of two events at The Wharf, aimed at celebrating its reopening and exploring future programming. The city plans to introduce a series of family-friendly events, including "Boogie on the Wharf," which will feature a dance floor, DJ, and dance instructor. This initiative is designed to be accessible and engaging for all community members, with a proposed budget of $6,000 for three events scheduled on Sundays.

The Art and Cultural Commission also presented plans for additional events, including a rebranded Maker's Market and two music events featuring youth bands. These activities aim to draw visitors to The Wharf and encourage them to explore the village area, enhancing local commerce and community spirit.

In response to previous concerns about budget constraints, city staff emphasized that the new event model is designed to minimize costs while maximizing community engagement. The council received positive feedback from the Business Improvement Area (BIA) and the Chamber of Commerce regarding the proposed events, indicating strong community support.

Additionally, the meeting addressed the ongoing operation of community classes despite the temporary closure of the community center. City officials confirmed that there would be no projected revenue loss, as classes continue to be offered in alternative spaces.

The council also reviewed public art initiatives, including the completion of the Begonia Festival commemorative project and plans for future installations. The Art and Cultural Commission aims to enhance public art visibility and maintenance, ensuring that Capitola remains vibrant and culturally rich.

As the council moves forward, they will seek official approval for the proposed budget and event plans, paving the way for a summer filled with community activities that promote engagement and enjoyment for residents and visitors alike.
